Howdy Folks,

I`m typ. on the "Triumph Forum" so; Sorry for the Intrusion.

A friend of mine has a `60MGA 1600 that is leaking quite a bit of Oil somewhere between the Engine & Trans.

Myself without even thinking about it said; It must be the "Rear Main Seal" that you`ll have replace.

Question #1: If that indeed is the case; Does the Engine & Trans have to pulled out of the car to install a new "Rear Main Seal"?

Question #2: I just scanned thru "VB & Moss" & they don`t even list a "Rear Main Seal"???? What am I missing here???

Thanx for all & any info.

Russ

no rear main seal in a MGA.(unless it has been converted to a 5 main MGB engine)Check oil level- be sure all the engine vents are not plugged like a dirt dawber in the draft tube.-determine if its from the engine or front trans seal causing the problem- or engine blowby from worn engine bore and rings. Lots to check. Bob

Howdy Bob,

"Thanx" for the education.

Should it potentially be the "Front Trans. Seal"; Do you have to pull the engine or could you simply drop the Trans?

Thanx Again,

Russ

Engine has to come out to do a front trans seal. It can be removed thru the passenger compartment BUT 3-10 times the work. Check all the other things before removing the engine! Bob

A restricted crankcase ventilation system (pretty simple on early cars) can cause oil to blow out of a lot of places - worth checking before you pull an engine.

If it is the trans seal, the MGB had an improved seal that can be fitted. If it is the rear main, it is difficult and costly to fix.

Howdy Folks,

I just wanted to say "THANX" for the info. & wishing All a "VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON".

Regards, Russ
