T-Series MG TF Notchy Steering - What is wrong?

Not sure I want to know the answer - but - what would cause my steering to feel notchy when I turn the wheel? That is, at certain points when I turn the steering wheel, it feels lumpy or like I am going over a notch. Does the rack need to be replace? Thanks.
 
Tom, It might not be as drastic as your imagining. Not saying this is the problem but, It could be the "Rack Damper" needs adjusting. It might be too tight. Have you had the rack apart? Has the rack been cleaned and new oil added? I think it would be better if you had the shop manual to guide you, or have someone who knows, show you the procedure to do this. PJ
 
PJ, Thanks. I got the car recently and do not know its history, other than it apparantly was not driven much. Ill take a look at the manual. Thanks again, Tom
 
Tom, Good luck with the car and keep us posted about it. Might sound sadistic, but I like knowing that there are others out there going through the same pain as I am! (Grin). Don't know how we do it, but I've often thought about why we fall in love with something that gives us so much aggravation. :jester: PJ

Tom, I had a problem like this with the TR3 and found a bent lh spindle ( vertical axis), Raise the front wheels off the ground and seperate each ball joint to isolate each spindle and the rack. Kevin
