If an AM radio (or FM for that matter) were factory installed in a 1967 B, what would it look like?

hehehehehehe..both the radios in James' post, above, were of US manufacture! The faceplate that says "British Motor Corporation" was made by the US distributor of MG's...behind it is either a Motorola, Panasonic, or whatever radio was locally purchased...no radio was installed by the factory or distributor for North American cars...they were all dealer installed (& many didn't have the BMC or BL faceplate)

In the UK, a Smiths HMV Radiomobile was installed as an option.

I need to open mine one day - because, it has no label on the front fascia, but it has got a badly peeling BL sticker on top of the case... AM/FM/8-track by the way, Probably a very popular item in 1977.

My 69 has what I believe to be an original radio which were very much a dealer installed option in those days hence the fact the face plate says "TRIUMPH"! Still works and we now have a local AM station that plays oldies - and I mean oldies like Sinatra and Bing Crosby. Its so cool.

Oh... When I think of oldies... There is the likes of the BeeGees, Black Sabbath, Maybe even Devo. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

You can buy reproduction radios but the are v expensive. Back in 68 or 69 a buddy of mine put one of the very first 8 tracks in his Lotus Cortina. We used to sit in it withe the volume cranked up as high as it would go. guess things havn't changed

My MGA's both have original radios...."Britsh Motor Corporation" printed across the top, so I assume they're the american made versions. Alot of people comment about them at shows....My wife also like to complain about it's poor sound quality, to which I reply: Well, "you want to drive a vintage car, then live with wintage sound....Theres a perfectly good TR6 with huge aftermarket speakers sitting in the driveway if you wanna trade".....So far no deal.

Or you can take one of the old radios with the BMC or BL logo on the face & have its guts modernized!

Oh, by the way....the British Motor Corporation (BMC) was formed by the merger of the Austin Motor Company and the Nuffield Organisation (parent of the Morris car company, MG, Riley and Wolseley) in 1952. Then, the British Leyland Motor Corporation ("BLMC"), was formed in 1968. Ultimately it would become nationalised as British Leyland then known just as BL.

So, when the radios saying British Motor Corporation were made, BMC was already gone!

I have the original radio that came with my car in 72. It's a dealer installed Motorola AM/FM. The sound quality is lousy, so it sets on the shelf. I put this $350.00 radio in the car, to make the wife happy, which you can't hear when driving! What a waste.(DUMB MOVE). I think I'll clean the original radio up and put it back in the car where it belongs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nopity.gif PJ

Don't have one in the car and not sure if I am going to. (and this from a musician) I have an "MG" face plate in it and woudl rather listen to the car for awhile until all the kinks are worked out.
Once day I might get one. I was just curious because I have seen many lately and not sure what would have been true to the car

My '79 that I bought new had a radio that said "Panasonic" on the faceplate....the dealer told me to go to the carosel in the showroom & pick which radio I wanted...& there weren't any with "BMC" or "BL" left by then.

Yeah the original radios in my B's are Panasonic as well...I think one might be KOSS.

I always love going to car shows & the guy with the "30,000 original mile" MGB that he trailered to the show tries to convince me that his British Motor Corporation radio is "factory original"! Then, he tries to prove the air conditioning is also factory original because it has a little placque on the dash that says "BL Air Conditioning"....I usually just laugh & wander off...that's probably why, when I do take a car to a show, I vote for the car that's still under restoration.

All Blaupunkts seem to fit well, and there always are Blaupunkts
available on eBay -- usually of proper age to match the car. Also
interesting: Blaupunkt offered AM/FM when many others were
simply offering AM.

German radios in British cars? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

Hey, Kenny - the clock in your dash is German!

Cool... It's missing a few teeth on a couple gears /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
