MG Midget 1500 crank shaft pulley

I have a 1975 MG Midget 1500 motor. My problem is with the crankshaft pulley. It will not go all the way in. It sticks out a 1/4 inch from the cover. You can move it left to right an there is a great deal of play. Inside the pulley there is not a straight line for the key to fit. There is an ident near the end. Any ideas?
