MG International 2006 - review

The MG International 2006 in Gatlinburg was fantastic. The drive up and through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park was superb...I started seeing MGs just before entering Cherokee and then an increasing number as I approached Gatlinburg. In Gatlinburg itself, about 1 in 4 cars was an MG...there would sometimes be a string of 8 or 10. In the open-air parking garage under my hotel I counted over 50 MGs...more than most any car show I've been to.
Friday was the day of the "Car Display" about 25 miles northeast of Gatlinburg in Cosby. Beautiful! A 50 or 60 acre field covered with big hardwoods that formed a shady canopy. Over 1000 MGs were on display! Mark and Mary, friends of mine from Athens, GA, were there in their beautiful red ’73 B and, not surprisingly, at the awards banquet on Saturday evening Mark walked off with a Second In Class demonstrating that his work is right up there with the very best in the country. I was to compete in the Midget - Chrome Bumper class (B12) but did not. To my surprise my little white Midget was invited to display in concours...new experience for me...I've never even been to a show where there was a concours.
Saturday Mark and Mary met up with me after breakfast and we drove the 25 miles out to Cades Cove...great drive. We then did the 11 mile loop around the cove; saw a bear up close and personal and lots of deer. It was a truly memorable day. Saturday evening was the banquet and awards and the Athens contingent did good.
Sunday it was time to head for home. I had planned ahead to take Monday off and get the Midget cleaned up, but the weather put a damper on that and I spent most of the day inside. It did however give me a chance to update my web site with some shots of MG2006. You can check it out at: www.raysmg.com under either the "News" or "Cruises and Shows" link.
