It cooled off somewhat yesterday so I got out the riding mower to cut the lawn.

It wouldn't start up, despite being jumped-started by the Toyota - just a whirring noise from the starter motor.

Thinking of SU fuel pumps and such, and with nothing to lose, I gave the starter some good taps with a hammer and then the thing fired right up.

You have to laugh!

oh the problem was the stater problem on the mower and with the knowledge of hammering on the starter motor of the MG to wake it up gave you the idea of doing the same to the mower. done that few times with the sprite till I bought a good new starter.

A bigger hammer is always a good option too.

Sweet! British Racing Green too! next thing you're going to tell me is that it has more power than my desmogged 1500. Oh? Dang.

It definatly has higher compression.

I've heard that the 1500 motor was derived from tractor.... So MG to riding mower is not that far of a stretch.
