MG/British Ale Connection

Read about this in this morning's edition of the local paper (The Leaf-Chronicle). The column is "Beer Man", authored by Jim Lundstrom.

The Morland Brewery in Abingdon is believed to have been one of the oldest in that ancient land of brewers. Benedictine monks esablished a monastery there in 674 A.D., and beer historians believe a brewery might have operated at the monastery from at least 1100. But it wasn't until the 1700's that the actual Morland Brewery came into being. A couple hundred years later, another business came to Abingdon. The MG car factory opened there in 1929.

At the plant was an old demonstration model MG saloon car that was covered in flecks of paint. Locals came to know the car as the "owld speckled 'un." When the MG factory celebrated its 50th year in Abingdon in 1979, Morland Brewery joined in the celebration by creating a beer for the occasion - Old Speckled Hen. Even though the Abingdon MG plant closed down the following year, the commemorative ale was well received, and has been the best-selling premium ale in the UK for the past two years.

Cheers!

The beer is available in certain stores, but I have been told by a (usually) reliable source that Coors have obtained distribution rights to this beer, since they also distribute Boddington's over here. The problem is that Old Speckled Hen has been affecting the sales of Boddington's, and Coors didn't like that, so in the areas where both are available, you may find that Old Speckled Hen will be going away, which is the reason for Coors taking the rights in the first place. Not carved in stone, just what I have been told.

Old Speckled Hen is excellent by the way, if you like ales.

I had Old Speckled Hen a while back but I think I got a bad one as it tasted like old motor oil and I was sick for a few days. Can beer "go bad" like milk?

but I can't find it locally and I would like to get some for a club function

I would beg to differ, beer all seems bad to me

I was a little self conscious about ordering a Coke in the pubs, but after awhile being the only one in the gang ordering a pint of the brown bubbly stuff (just have to remember to ask them to leave the friggin lemon out

I'm surprised no one mentioned the shape of their logo.

This "Hen - MG" trivia can be valuable information, especially in pubs. The image below is of a mug that a pub operator (in Chichester) gave me late one night when I started waxing eloquent about the connection. Good trivia like that is often good for a few free ones. Sorry about the image quality - I took it with the spherical "Net meeting" camera on top of my monitor.
