MG badges

So, this relates to the Saab Shelby wheels of mine.

I've figured out that a Honda Accord alloy wheel center cap will fit my wheels. I've obtained 4 "reproduction" units specifically because they do not have the Honda emblem on them.

Next, I want to have MG badges on them, but I don't particularly care too much for the Rostyle type badges. Plus, those are too small for this style of cap. So, I've ordered 4 MG grill badges for a Midget. They're red, chrome, and black encased in clear plastic and measure 2.25" across the flats. The ones I got seem to have come in a yellow plastic holder. I assume the yellow plastic isn't supposed to be used. The badges have no back posts on them. So how are these supposed to be affixed to the grill of a Midget?

More importantly, does any one know of an adhesive that is strong enough to hold these to wheels, and won't eat paint?

Epoxo-88... or other good industrial epoxy. JB Weld, also.

I've used a dab of silicone to keep the badges on my rostyle's centre caps.

Any good auto body glue will hold them in place.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Before I permanently glue the badges to the center caps I have one more question and that is "to paint or not to paint?"

The center cap disks are chromed, but the area they'll be mounted to is painted. So, should I paint them to match, or leave them chrome. Mind you the badge is so big, that very little of the center cap surface is exposed. Prior to getting the badges I was leaning towards painting them. Now, however, because the badges are so big, I'm not so sure. The little bit of chrome that shows behind the badges might help to 'set them off'.

Anyways, I've attached a picture of a wheel with the chrome center cap in place, and the badge setting on it.

Just my opinion, but I would leave them chrome. By the way, those emblems look great on those wheels. If you have problems with epoxy holding them on, you could always look for the double sided tape that they use to hold body moldings onto the side of cars.

3M makes some stuff that holds like it is welded on. Body shops should have if, if you can't find it at your local parts store.

I thought about that double sided emblem tape too. Now that I've set the emblem on the center cap with it on the wheel, I've noticed that there is a slight curve in either the cap or the emblem. So, if I glue them on it'll be impossible to get the glue on 100% of the area between the cap and the emblem. So, maybe that double sided emblem tape might be better. That emblem tape is thick'ish foam type material, isn't it?

There is some that is a foam like and others that are just the thickness of the tape itself. The foam type may be the way to go.

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/iagree.gif...leave it chrome & use double sticky tape.

Looks real nice...I may have to steal your idea for my Carroll Shelby's!

Thanks. That was the idea behind using the Midget grill badges. I wanted something more 'elegant' than the Rostyle stickers. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I might go the other way with this. The chrome on the wheel center might lessen the effect of the chrome trim on the badge itself. By leaving the chrome around it, you're changing the design of the logo somewhat away from what the factory intended. Being masters of aesthetic design, I tend to go with their judgment on most things of this nature.

something you might want to check first!

will a tire machine punch them off? Or are there backing plates you can remove from inside (with the logo) to open up the center.

Doesn't the whole cap - not just the MG logo - come off for mounting/dismounting tires?

aye, if I'm not mistaken the centers have to come off for mounting and dismounting tires from the rim.

These center caps just "snap" into place just like the Rostyle center caps do. So installing/removing them is very easy to do.

Steve - I'll bring a wheel, center cap, and a badge to the Westfield viewing tomorrow. Sometimes things like this are easier to figure out with a physical item versus digital pics. Of course, knowing my luck, I'll get an exact 50/50 split on chrome vs painted... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I WANNA COME TOO!! WAAHHH!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

You might use that alternator-less engine in one, Doc....hehehehe

Go to your room, Barnhill.
