Metalastic versus generic Roto-flex couplings

I have read a number of posts on the Metalastics rotoflex couplings, and how most of the regular parts suppliers the majority of us use don't know supply them. This is indicated clearly by the price as Metalastic are around $180.00 US compared to the $40.00 or so for generic brands. My question is......

1) What makes the Metalastic ones different than the generic ones...metal inside, armour plating...what?
2) Are the Metalastic ones that much better, i.e. longer life, safer, what have you?
3) How long will the generic ones last compared to the metalastic ones.
4) What happens if a Rotoflex coupling fails? I have seen products called "Axle savers" on some of the racing web sights. These fit between the axles and supposedly if a Rotoflex fails, the axle stays aligned and doesn't destroy itself and anything else it hits....are these worth while?

Sorry more than one question but enquiring minds what to know!

Thanks for your input Hilsideser,

I saw that when doing some research, on prices, but I couldn't find anything that would anwser my questions.

I don't mind spending the money if they are worth it, but sometimes more money doesn't mean better...just more money.

Just trying to figure out what's up....anyone have any experience with both types??

The Metalastik ones are superior and will last tens of thousands of miles and many years in a street car that isn't thrashed regularly.

They're worth the extra price, and then some.

The research I did, above, is still good as far as I know.

Let us know.

I'm still a long ways away from the point where I'll be purchasing couplings for the "project" my son and I are building...or will get back to building if either of us ever finds time, but it will get Metalastik joints. The job of changing them is too much of a PITA to have to do it very often. And from everything I've read over the years on Forums and other outlets for venting by GT6 and late Vitesse owners in the UK and US, almost nothing good has ever been said about any of the aftermarket versions!

Excellent, sounds like I will get Metalastik couplings.
Do we do "group buys" on these forums?
Some of the other auto forums I belong to allow it, but not sure about this one.
Certainly I wouldn't want to do anything wrong or against the rules, but sometimes if you can get enough people interested, a supplier will give you a substantial discount.
Just a thought
