TR2/3/3A Memory refresh: non ARP cylinder head studs.....

I always wipe the threads with a thin coating of oil. Dry threads and a dry nuts threads will give false reading. Just make sure you don't over torque them. Problem with old studs or bolts is they have already been stretched and reusing them could cause them to break on re assembly. The best thing to do is replace the old studs with new, the extra cost could save you aggravation and money when re assembling.

I use a squirt of plain oil on the threads. I agree that the original studs often do not tighten up well. If it feels like the torque is starting to become non-linear as you tighten the nuts, then I do recommend getting rid of that stud. Every time I have re-built a TR engine I find a couple studs that don't tighten right, so I discard them.
