Are all the memory chips basically the same quality? How about Arch Memory, or Crucial, or Offteck? Don't know if these folks are manufactures or just vendors. The wife has a Toshiba Mini Notebook that will fit in her purse, but it only has 1 gig of memory. I want to upgrade it to 2 gig. Easy to get the chip, but is one better than another. These little computers will only take 2 gig of memory max. I don't like Toshiba's, but it works for her, but it's Sooooo slow! PJ

I do not know of any Chinese company that manufacturers memory. They all buy components and assemble memory to the customers' price requirements. Changing just 1 component can make a huge difference in the quality of a module. In assembling components they feel they are manufacturing memory. I know of only 1 company in the US that manufacturers and assembles all the parts of its memory...Micron, also sold through its Crucial division. Kingston is also reliable and consistent.

Thanks for the info! I'll go with Micron/Crucial. PJ

Just ordered a Crucial 2 gig chip. Thanks again for your input. PJ

You'll be fine, Paul. Most of those chips are made in the same place (Taiwan) and labeled for the various companies distributing them. About a decade ago there was a fire at that plant and the price of RAM went stratospheric.
