Used to see how many people could fit in the trunk to see the movie for free.

Covid has actually brought the drive-in back. We have two that have opened up in Santa Monica. They have inflatable screens and broadcast on FM for sound in your car. Not cheap. Something like $50, not including food.

We still have our drive-in. Get the movie sound thru your radio. They just added a second screen 4 yrs ago. St. Louis area car clubs help keep them busy by doing movie nights. Have another some 40 miles North and it still has the grass. By the way, the 57 Chevy in front of the 56 could have been mine.
P.S. won't admit to how many fits in the trunk of a 57.

Oh yeah.... as a kid my parents would pile all of my brothers and sister into the car and off we went to the drive-in movie. I still remember that big bulky speaker hanging on the drivers window.

My buddy found out you can't drive off with the speaker still in the window, that was after they put cables on them to keep kids from stealing them. Cost him a new window in his 51 Mercury! :highly_amused:

Of course as teens, we never snuck other kids into the theater in the truck. Oh no, we never did that

We have one in town. It has two or three screens and swap meets during the day on the weekends. There are several in the Bay Area. Having a Club movie night is on our proposed schedule for this year.

1961 Lincoln Continental. Trunk release in the glove box. Trunk was cavernous... jus' sayin'.

Drive-in was the only theater running this last summer. They were playing classic movies. One weekend was a double feature of Spaceballs and Blazing Saddles!!

My dad bought a 57 ford with all the tricks. Piece of junk. So sad to see his joy disappear but he got over it and traded for a 60 chevy convertible. That was a cool car but he wisely sold it 2 months before I got my license.

Resurgence of Drive ins here as well - it has long been a thought of mine to see if you could work with a Drive to have a classic car movie night. Offer it to various clubs and see what happens. Obviously American Graffiti but I'd gladly watch Smokey and the Bandit or Cannonball Run or Gumball Rally or Grease or just about anything bubblegum like that from the seat of the car.
