Last weekend a friend ran in a fund-raiser for families of injured vets. Hot and humid Boston weather, but quite a day.

Over 1000 people of all ages ran 9k through central Boston, ending the run by touching home plate at Fenway Park. We were watching from the stands, and cheered as Kevin, in t-shirt, shorts, and track shoes entered Gate C, ran down from 3rd to home, and touched the plate.

The loudest cheer of the day came a few minutes later, when a U.S. Marine did the same thing - but wearing full combat gear, boots and pack.

We owe a lot to our military, including those for whom Memorial Day was created. To honor and remember those we have lost.

A bit of a personal Memorial Day here, this has finally been resolved.

Learned of it yesterday.

Freaky the way the dates come so close, too.

My POW-MIA flag has been hung this year with a bit more irony, methinks.

The current crop of ~kids~ in service are awesome. Simply awesome.
 
I think my signature says how I feel. Freedom is not FREE! A lot of those men and woman continually pay the bill. God Bless them! PJ
 
Great show on public TV last night for the National Memorial Day concert in DC. Gary Sinise and another actor played out a narrative story told by a Korean war vet about a very brave black soldier's actions that saved several men's lives. I don't think there was a dry eye in the entire crowd after that. Gen. Colin Powell also delivered a very stirring speech, reminding us that no one hates war more than a soldier.

Here in old Virginia, there is no shortage of military cemetaries and remembrance ceremonies. Revolutionary soldier's graves are nearby Charlottesville. Arlington, in Robert E. Lee's front yard about 90 miles north, is the big one.

There are scores of Civil War burial sites in and around Richmond. There's also one right here at UVA, about 2 miles from my home, with Union and Confederate dead buried in it (UVA hospital served as a military hospital during the Civil war, WWI and WWII).

Constant reminders of the selfless sacrifices that have been made by a few, for us all.

My hope is that maybe someday, remembering these sacrifices and the horrors of war will make us learn to live together in peace.

I'll keep remembering, and hoping. :yesnod:
 
On Sun/Mon we met up in Washington with some friends over from the UK. Sunday we went round the memorials; very moving seeing people touching the names on the Vietnam wall. We also watched thousands of motor cycles in the Rolling Thunder Rally.

Today we saw Gary Sinise as part of a wonderful Memorial Day parade.

Took in the National Archives with the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and the Bill of Rights; not to forget the Magna Carta as the grand daddy of them all.

An excellent weekend.

Gary Sinise is one of my favorite "people" (never mind he's also a great actor). The man has my respect for what he does for our troops.
 
Along with Memorial Day we also have the 66th anniversary of D-Day coming up. With that in mind, watch this (takes awhile to follow):

My father was at D-Day +3 didn't find that out till many years later
 
+2 for mine. Seldom mentioned until I was past 10 or so. I've seen him tear up only a few times, once was as he related an Ardennes experience and another as I boarded a plane for S.E.A.

Tough old bunch, those guys.
