Me too. I'm also bothered by the commercialization with all the celebratory "Memorial Day Sales." I find it in bad taste to use the occasion of remembering the fallen for the purpose of making money.
 
We usually go to the service that they hold here.
We would make it a point to take our kids,& Granddaughter,
so they would have an understanding of what it's about.
It's always good to see kids there.

When someone says "Happy Memorial Day", the best response is "Remember", turn and depart the area.
