Mechanical Tach Repair and calibration

I have been having some problems with the tach in my BJ7. It has been a long story, but I finally took it out and cleaned it up. It now works better but it jumps all over the place and is not reliable. Is anybody aware of anyone who can fix/recalibrate a mechanical tach. I have asked local clubs and garages in my area without success, so I casting the old net further.
Thanks,

Steve

How's the cable?
Reason I ask is a speedometer will do that with a dry or failing cable.
Twists up a wee bit and snaps loose.

Steve,

I agree it sounds like it could be a dry/kinked drive cable & would look at that first.

But if you think the problem is in the actual tach you want Nisonger Instruments. They do really nice work and are very fair in pricing - I have even had them calibrate my spedometer based on the rear gear ratio and rolling dia of the tire, and when I installed it it was spot on. I have had several gages rebuilt by them and have not been dissapointed.

If they sat for a while, they might need to be lubed around the copper winding.

Nisonger is definitely your best option if you have to rebuild it. I've used them numerous times, and have always been happy with their quality, service and price.

Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty sure it is the actual tach as I replaced the cable and the symptoms remained even when attached to a drill with a fairly straight cable. But I have been down a few roads with this problem, so we will see. I'll take a look at the copper winding before I send it off ot Nisonger.
Thanks again,
Steve
