me again, Hazard light switch

ok, my first electrical gremlin.

last night my blinkers stopped working, trying to figure out why I tried the hazard button. the button was frozen solid, when just a day earlier it worked perfectly.

unfortunately I pressed to hard and the plastic switch broke, but I was able to turn the hazards on, and the blinkers now work.

BUT, they will stop working again, and I have to flip my broken hazard switch on and off to get the blinkers to work again.

so, I need a new hazard switch, and I need to figure out why it is causing problems with my blinkers?

anyone have any idea whats going on here?

tell me when you all get sick of reading my posts, I'll stop !!

Ok, the power for the blinkers is feed thru the hazard switch. when the hazard lamps are on power is shut off to the blinkers, and when the hazards are off power is sent to the blinker switch. the hazard switch is easily disassembled and cleaned, put back together and will give many more years of service. when disassembling pay careful attention to orientation. Piece of cake.

The multi-port connection where the wiring harness plugs into the back of the switch might be loose. I had that happen a few months ago and the signals stopped working.

mark & jim, thanks for the info.

that explains why my blinkers would periodically stop working.

question, on ebay I see several hazard light switches for sale, will a switch from any year work? or a switch from a MGB?

As long as it's the rectangular Lucas, yes. I just replaced all of them. Seems the repro ones all have chrome housings. There was some NOS (original) Lucas's on Ebay a while back and I wish I would have bought them. The replacement switches aren't as good as the OEM's (sloppy feel when engaging)- and those left a lot to be desired.

sounds like yo need a parts car.......

if I get a parts car, my wife will divorce me

hmm, a parts car . . .

anyway, the guy who is listing the hazard switch says in his catalog the switch is the same from 1973-1979, and his hazard switch is from a 1970.

will it work? the picture shows it is rectangular

joe

it will work...98.5% sure

well, I took a better look at my hazard light switch, and what broke off was the see through plastic window on the switch, everything else is there

unfortunately I can't find the piece that came off.

I'll try and get the switch out, and see what is making it hard to engage.

now I need to find a new switch, broken or working !!!

These switches come apart easily, and are easy to fix.
Recently, I bought a '78 Midget that had been sitting
for many years. Every switch on the car was bad, but
I was able to repair them all. Once its apart, all of the
contacts will be visible. Simply use some fine sandpaper
(I used 400 grit) to burnish the contacts until you
see bright copper. Use alcohol to clean everything.

The hardest part of the project by far was getting the
headlight and hazard switch out of the dash.

one switch to bind them! all yep that is a very critical switch and complicated.
