Mark III Fuel pump location

Starting to wake up my sleeping 67. Where is the electric fuel pump. looked in the catalogs and didn't show location.

also will the electric fuel pump work if battery is not hooked up right? I notice in catalog there was a pump listed for negative and one listed for postive ground.

I also purchased a used g-24 battery from Interstate batteries for it yesterday. seems big. My heater has been removed so don't really know. Is this the right battery?

I assume you mean a MkIII MIDGET, which is a MkIV SPRITE? Either way, the electric fuel pump is mounted in front of the rear axle on the right side. Jack up the right side, remove the rear wheel and the pump is easily accessible through the wheel well.

Originally, these cars were positive ground but later changed to negative. Many people convert the early cars to negative ground. That's why pumps are sold in both configurations. The polarity of the pump must be correct for it to function correctly. Some pumps will be damaged if connected wrong, but some pumps will just not work.

On American import cars, negative earthing was introduced on Sprites from HAN9 72034 and on Midgets from GAN4 60460.

FYI.

Nothing had electric pumps from the factory though, right? All mechanical off the block under the carbs. You can mount an after market electric where you want but by the tank is most efficient pumping, you can probably get way with a negative earth pump on a positive ground car by making sure it doesn't ground itself and running it on it's own circuit but you'd be far better off converting it to negative ground from the get go if you ask me.

Thanks, I heard the pump pumping when I had first hooked up battery that came with car, it hooked up standard.

Then I went and purchased a different battery and hooked it up pos ground, I didn't hear it come on, but I check fuel level in tank and it only has a 1/2" of fuel in tank.

Only Sprite MkI and MkII (Midget MkI) had engine driven mechanical fuel pumps. All Sprigets after that (1964-1973) were electric pumps until the 1500 Midget in 1974. Early 1275 engine blocks used a blanking plate over the mechanical fuel pump opening before eventually casting it closed, but I don't know of any 1275 Spridget applications that ever used the mechanical pump.

Oh wow, thanks. I thought they were mechanical all the way to the 1500, sorry! I'm pretty old school with my MK1 Midget I guess.

A note about the fuel pumps. My MKIII Midget's fuel pump went bad so I bought a new set of points for it. But they did not fit. Turns out I had the German replacement pump, not the original Bosch. There are no proper replacement points available for the German replacement pump. Watch for this.

I used a mechanical one on my 1275 engined frogeye. But I can't remember what it's originally from. It's not an Austin mini as the fuel out pipe is directly in line with the exhaust manifold. It may have been a morris marina, (an English car/1970's crap). I'll try & find the box at weekend.

I always perferred a mechanical pump over an electric, Do they have a problem with vapor lock with out the electric
