Manual Choke Conversion Question...

Posted in "What's goin' on" thread earlier:

FWIW: The manual choke conversion is an effective way of reducing the number of "thingies" to give you grief: It's either "on" or "off". Extra coolant hoses/plumbing are excess to requirement and subject to failure. There are enough things on LBC's which are prone to malfunction already incorporated in the original design, so IMHO eliminating later "add-ons" increases the reliability of the car. I try to follow the "K.I.S.S." rule... and Edsel Murphy's ;}

I'll second Dr.Entropy on that one. If not considering a different carb(s) altogether, then the manual choke conversion gets my vote.

Sharpish, there are some good things to say about a manual choke, however if your auto choke is set properly and does its job, why change. The good Dr. has a good argument. I went from a manual to and auto and I much prefer the auto. I guess it's just personal preference.

I have manual choke on my '76. It was on the car when I got it. I can't complain about how well it performs it's job, but I will complain about the workmanship of this particular conversion. I've seen some pics of other ZS carb'ed cars with manual choe conversions that are a heck of a lot better looking that what I have. The manual conversion on my car looks like nothing more than a disk notched in such a way to allow it to move the choke mechanism.

This is the first car I've owned with manual choke, and I hate to say it but I miss the convenience of auto choke. heh... I see new and rebuilt "to spec" ZS carbs on eBay all the time complete with auto-choke... and they're oh so tempting. One thing that would make me jump without hesitation is if someone were to make an electric choke mod for the ZS. For now, I think I'm just going to keep eyeing those ZS carbs on eBay.... heh
