Dunno if it would work on a Spit, but on my TR3A I use a U-joint socket and 6" extension.

Have to put the socket on mostly by feel, but it works OK once it's on the nut.

I used a box wrench and went very slowly. Make sure the threads are clean and start the nuts before you position the manifolds. You more or less have to guess at the torque, there is no way to get a torque wrench on there.
