Manifolds Powder coating vs. Painting?

Ok I know there are a few out there who’ve painted their dual SU intake manifolds and probably one or two out there who’ve painted their late model single ZS intake/exhaust cast manifold too.

What I’d like to know is how the paint is holding up and if what brands of paints you’d recommend for this application.

Likewise what do you think about powder coating? Anybody done this to their manifolds and because I’m sure it’s a more expensive – if you thought it was worth the money.

Also whats will powder coating work equally good on Cast as it does on Steel?

Thanks,

I cleaned mine with a cleaning solution by soaking over night and it came out looking like new. I like the original aluminum look. JMHO. PJ

I believe JB had the exhaust manifold on BinaBox ceramic coated by JettHot. That may be the best coating to go with as it's supposed to reduce radiated heat from the manifold.

Jet Hot coats it inside & out which greatly reduces heat.

Would you ever use Jet Hot on something like a Peco header? Just curious cause I remember when I had headers on a big block, it generated a ton of heat. I know under the hood of an MG this would be a bad thing.

I believe they also have a range of colors to choose from including their metallic ceramic coating which closely resembles chrome with the side bennie of not discoloring like chrome.

Sure! As soon as a new one gets hot, all that pretty red paint burns right off!

Betcha that'd cost a pretty penny.

Brittek sells the peco already ceramic coated from I think for 100 or 120 more than the stock header. One of the few regrets I have about the 75b is not knowing about the jet hot and getting the header down. The peco header puts out some serious heat.

I wonder how much of a reduction in heat the Jet hot allows.

Does Brittek have a website?

I don't know whats up with Brittek but the last time I tried to call them the number was disconnected.

That said I'm thinking about having mine exhaust header jet coated and the intake painted for now. Unless they offer me a package deal.

I paid $85.00 to have my 80 B Z/S manifold powdercoated with what they described as some type of heat resistant black actually twice, smelled really funny after running a short time, found out why, a lot of the coating was cracked up and laying on the left frame rail. I will be using the jet hot when it comes back off.

There is a guy local to me that does coating. He tells me he has a coating that will withstand 2k degrees, and he can do my header for $120.00. Since he is local, and I can watch/help I think I am going to give this a try.

The guy coats both inside and outside, so the header should last a while. Not as long as the cast iron manifold I am sure, but longer than an uncoated header.

Once I get is done, I will post some pics.

As for my intake, I just left it bare aluminum. I do have one that I polished up just for fun (yes, I do have way too much free time). I was thinking of getting the intake coated in silver, but I am not sure that this would do much for the intake charge.

I thought he was originally asking about painting the SU "INTAKE" manifold and also the exhaust???

IMO painting the intake is silly, as they will clean up extremely well and look like new. As for the exhaust, Eastwood has a cast coating that works very well at a price well below powder coating. Ceramic coating is extremely expensive compared to other methods and to me would be a waste on a "B" engine. But, to each his own.

Go for it....

You won't be disappointed.

The coating really reduces under bonnet temps & extends the life of the header dramatically.

Plus....It looks cool /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif
