Manifold clamps AWOL!!!

The two bottom manifold clamps fell out at some time in the past 10 years, along with the studs! Strangely enough, it does not seem to have made any difference.

However, I'll be getting new ones, along with ones for the top. Although those big washers seemed to have worked - maybe I should leave well alone!

What do you reckon my chances are of being able to get those bottom studs and clamps fitted w/o removing the carbs/linkages?

On the top, is it OK to install one clamp at a time (ie remove nut and washers, install a clamp) or would that warp a manifold?

On another note, I'm thinking of spraying the K&N filters and filler cap a matt black (after a primer). What do you think?

Cheers!

I would think you should be able to install the studs without removing the carbs. It may be a little tedious. Are the studs missing or ate you replacing?

You can change one clamp at a time without any problems.

The spraying of the filters is up to you. Personally, if you want them to look original, go back to stock gravel strainers. You spent the money for K&N, wear them proudly.

You might be able to get the studs in there without removing the manifolds, but installing the lower clamps definitely requires that the manifolds be loose from the engine. Otherwise there isn't enough clearance between the end of the stud & the manifold.

Personally, I'd just bite the bullet and pull them off, so you can see what you're doing. Kind of a shame, though, if the ones you have are stuck so well that they hold without being clamped. Lots of folks have trouble with those gaskets even with the clamps!

Could you get by using bolts instead of studs?
Never tried it, but I don't think that would get you out of having to take the manifold loose, unless you had really minimal thread depth into the head.

But feel free to prove me wrong!

Randall,

I'll give it a go when the clamps arrive and report back!

Cheers!

PS. Recognize those washers under the head stud nuts? They are the ones you kindly sent me about 10 years ago when I was replacing the head gasket. Still holding up!

There, that looks better.

I'm pleased to report that it is possible to install the bottom center large clamps (using bolts instead of the missing studs). I used 2" grade 8 bolts but hack-sawed 1/4" of the ends to ensure they did not bottom out. Also used blue thread-locker this time instead of anti-sieze

Cheers!
