Mallory Dizzy

Has any body fitted a Mallory Dizzy into a Daimler Dart SP 250 V8? Is it the correct rotation?
Also will it fit into a Daimler V8 2.5 1963? Same engine as above.

Worn out 40 year old Lucas mechanical dizzy. Even after a very expensive rebuild, that is if you can find all the parts it cannot compete with modern technology of a Mallory or similar. Just wondered if anybody had done it.

If (for whatever reason) you wish to replace your distributor with a different one...

~Click Here~ for another idea (I have not tried this....just passing on the info).

I have a Mallory dual point dizzy (that if I remember correctly came from Moss!) in my BE and have had no problems for years! I replaced the original for the same reason...it had worn out! One advantage to the Mallory is I can go to the local speed shop and pick up cap, rotor, point sets and condensers (I can also get them at the local boating store since there are quite a few Mallory marine applications!)

OK I have been in touch with both Mallory & 123. And it appears that I have been given the wrong information. Mallory do not yet make a Dizzy for a V8 heme engine as it goes the other way around to most V8 engines.
Also 123 as yet have not made one for the V 8 heme engine, for the same reason as Mallory.
However both are in the process of making one, I won't hold my breath!

When I needed a points type dist for my Alfa Giulia (they did actually come with Lucas, Bosch or Marelli) I just grabbed the nearest spare Lucas. But it turned the wrong way! Oh Gosh, What was I to do? I removed the centrifugal advance pivot pins and re-welded them to the other position on the mounting plate, flipped the weights over and voila, a Lucas unit that turns clockwise. I had to modify the rotor slot a bit and I don't use the vacuum advance, which the car never used anyway. It works great and sure beats that stupid Marelli football sized distributor cap.

Hello SS,

I just noticed that you are UK based, you should have no problem in getting it reconditioned. They are very simple devices and I don't believe that you will notice any significant improvement with a modern technology distributor.
Older classic engines are not so critical with ignition as modern 'high tech' engines.

hehee. I fobbed off the Marelli unit, stuffed an old Bosch one in the 1750 in the Spider. Now I don't cringe while driving in the rain. The Marelli would drop out in a heavy FOG. sheesh.

I'll admit I've never worked on a Daimler distributor, but in theory, a proper recurve and repair of the standard factory misalignemnts should net you equal performance to the Mallory. The hemi is a different animal and takes a LOT more advance than your standard engine. Try advancing your timing a few degrees to see if it peps things up!

Personally, I think the original Lucas is superior to a lot of the cheap replacement distributors. Mallory is about the only one currently available for British cars that can be considered an upgrade in my opinion, and even then its not all that much better. Its a dead match for a properly rebuilt Lucas, better than a NOS unit for sure.
