made a new tool

Offline
most of you know i love making tools anything i can come up with to make a job easier if i need one that is unavailable or too expensive for a one off shot at a job or even if i dont appreciate the way a standard tool performs ill make my own, well heres one i made up for rebuilding my trans. i left my healey work manual with the guy that was rebuilding my engine didnt think id need it because i took so many pictures when i disassembled it, so i did come up with this on my own, however im no longer able to reach as high in the bushes with my pruning sheers. ah it was conceived late sunday afternoon. 23/32" = .718 dia. x 7.5" long. i call it "the austin healey 3000 transmission case temporary layshaft pre-loading tool" for short. its used to pre-load the layshaft with all the needle bearings spacers etc. once you place the layshaft with the "tool" through its center in the case and align it at both ends you just slide the layshaft into one end of the case and through the assembly the "tool" simply slides out the other end leaving the layshaft and all the bits in place. it worked perfectly first shot.

And I thought my pinky fingers did a good job. This would also give me an excuse to not prune trees any more!

I have a broom handle that is the exact diameter. It is now a bit shorter than original. It's technically called a dummy shaft. The only way to go when assembling a gear box.

keoke i perceived this forum to be a place of sharing information in an effort to assist one another in achieving a common goal i.e. getting our beloved l.b.c's repaired in good running order, i try to be light harted and amusing while doing so, i didnt expect to received a standing ovation for my post on "made new tool, while it may or may not be new or worthwhile information to you personally id hopped it may help at least one other person that might be attempting a transmission rebuild and considered my effort here worth while, perhaps my perception of what this forum is all about is incorrect, hay ive been wrong before.

Anthony,

I find every piece of information in this forum to be useful. Whether I already did that project, are about to do that project, or are in the middle of that project, it is something I can benefit from. I enjoy the humor and I appreciate the knowledge that this forum has to offer. Everyone has a little bit different take on how to solve a problem. Put all of those points of information together and you can have a solution based on your abilities, tools, and budget.

After pinching my pinky fingers positioning the layshaft, I look at a post like this and it goes something like this:
"<thuck> ... Wow, I could have had a V8!"

Thanks for this post,
Mark

Hey ! 7777's Make the next one a "Doozie"---Keoke---- /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

I’ve been thinking of a grease cup removal tool for the front wheel. Weld a 5/16-24 nut onto a slide hammer. Screw it on, one whack and your done. Lord knows it would be a better use than for bodywork. I’ve seen cars that look like they were hit with a shotgun. So many holes and the dent was still there.

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gifGood evening Greg;
