Can the lug nuts meant for use with the wire wheel hub be use with disc wheels? I know they'll fit but are the safe to use in this manner?
 
No, they're not safe. Somewhere, there is a specific warning against doing that.

IIRC, the steel wheel nuts were actually made larger during early production, to help keep them from pulling through the wheels.

Or as my English teacher Miss Handley would have said: 'You can but you may not'.

Used nuts are pretty easy to find worked well for me when I needed some to carry around (still had a disc spare even when running wires).
