OK , I knew I shouldnt have taken it apart, but I can't help myself.

Now after cleaning the internals I am becoming, shall we say frustrated putting it back together. The freaking brushes on sorings wont let the commutator back in. I pried off the springs and got the commutator on, but now cant get the springs on.

Any tips from the sages out there?

Cool video.

I figured out he starter. I took it apart again and pulled brushes out of the slots, then put the springs back on without the brushes. Slid the armature/ commutator in and bolted up. Then held the springs back with a small screwdriver and got the brushes in.

Not sure if his is the correct procedure but seemed to work

I agree, this is such a hassle! The small copper blocks that are on springs need to be pulled out while you put it back together. While it is appart I always pull them out and kind of lodge them against the housing they sit in (I tried taking the springs out and putting them in later and that didn't work out nicely). Then you need to carefully put it have together. Once you screw it back together it is safe to pop the copper pieces back in place. I can provide pictures if you still aren't following...

I spent hours trying to get my starters to work (I had 2 originals) but couldn't get it to turn correctly. Finally just bought a new Bosch one. Had them appart and back together 5 times before it came to that.

at least I'm not the only one frustrated. Like I said I managed to get it back together.
Now, I haven't tested it yet, so we'll see if I got back together correctly...

Yeah, I was surprised how simple the sewing is...terrible however in how the terminal gets power to the top of he motor, so touchy...

You know, Bill, I'm amazed that they have market for the gear reduction starters cause I have a pile of them as well. In general, they seem quite reliable. Generators and regulators are another matter!
