Lubrication of Generator Bearing

Cutlass

The front cast aluminum plate of the generator contains a ball bearing held in place by a sandwich of two additional plates on either side, secured by three steel rivets. There is supposed to be a felt washer and a steel washer in the sandwich, but I can see neither. The bearing feels and sounds ok, but the grease is obviously old and in need of replacement. Taking the whole thing apart, repacking or replacing the bearing and fitting new rivets is not that big of a deal for me, although I'll have to find the appropriate rivets at Sun 'N Fun later this week. But before doing so, I'd like to know if anyone has tried successfuly (or not) to re-lubricate the old bearing without disassembly? Thanks.

Hi Cutlass, rather than doing all that work I would simply replace that old bearing with one of the newer sealed type. Futher as I recall I tapped the rivet holes and used screws to reassemble the front housing.---Fwiw---Keoke

Thanks. Since there are two bearing retaining plates, did you insert screws from both sides, or run a long screw through and use a nut of some type?

Not sure Cutlass, but I think I only removed the rear plate to extract the old bearing. I do no recall using long screws and nuts though---Keoke
