what fluid do i put in the Carbs
on my first my green 74 i had ATF

I had break fluid in
then looked at the Manuel and tried the recommended engine oil
but the second carb is still not fluttering like the first carb

ATF is what I use. Piston can be carefully cleaned I believe with a Scotch Scrubby pad to get the tarnish off. Just a little not a lot.
 
Use engine oil. I have for a long long time. Thirty years maybe.

:iagree: engine oil works great for me - though in reality they are all similar viscosity so it likely doesn't really matter
 
That is very true John-Peter but engine oil always seems handy.
 
When I bought my '79 new, the service manager at the dealership gave me a quart of ATF to use in the Zenith...used it ever since, 120,000+ miles with only 1 rebuild!

Lots of people use 20W50........I'm sticking with ATF!

Yep on the 3-in-1, the can makes it easy to put in the correct amount with no mess.

I really dont see much diference in any of the stuff were all using I have tried all most all the above with what appears to be the same results. I think all it does is provide a seal between the pluger and the wall and it such a huge gap viscosity ranges can vary greatly and have a same affect.
Ketchup would probley work!
 
There is a difference when useing differing viscosity. Thiner the damper is allowed to move open faster, thicker slower. Thiner is used for raceing where you want throtle to move quickly, RPM to increase from idle to full fast, and thicker on street engines where engine responce is not so critical and you wish the time between serviceings to be longer.

mmmm....Ketchup!

I bet different weights of fluid would make a difference. It would depend on how new/worn the corresponding components are. (springs, body, piston, etc.)

I don't think using a different oil will help get your carbs tuned. What is the problem you're having? Is everything else set up perfectly? The carb is the last thing to adjust. In my experience the main reason for the "can't tune carb" symptom is leaky throttle shafts. If you have those, you'll never get it tuned right (check this by spraying carb cleaner on the throttle shafts on either side of where they exit the carb body while it's running...if the idle speed changes (because the carb cleaner will momentarily plug the leak) then you have leaky throttle shafts (i.e. massive variable vacuum leak).
 
Agree, oil in carbs has nothing to do with tuneing.
 
Dont know if you have checked this or not but it happened to me.
On cold start I would pull the choke a little to get a fast Idle 1100 rpm some times I would pull it to far and just push it back in a little.What would happen is the choke on the rear carb would hang just a little and when warm showed up. It didnt do it all the time. Maybe push up on the jet tubes after each jet nut adjustment just to be sure its home.
 
Light oil let the piston open quicker, for example we don't use anyhting in race SU carbs, but on the street if you have ever thing else dialed in and you still get off trottle stumble, try a heavier oil, inb your pistons like a 20/50, it will often time cure off throttle stumbles.
 
Guys, make sure your jet shaft is highly hand polished to preclude it hanging up on the gaskets that make the seal.

It still needs to be well centered of course.

It can be pulled and polished and reinstalled without messing with takeing the carb apart.
 
well its at least running a little with the damper out I do have ATF in the rear one.

I forgot that the thing i did before i went out last time is I put in new springs the one for the rear carb was broken. I adjusted that and made some progress today.
where should the throttle shaft lever pin
