Am I the only one who thinks that jet & rocket powered Land Speed Record/Racing (LSR) cars are just silly. I just read about a fellow who bought an old F-104 and hopes to run 800+ with it.

I think they ought to be wheel-driven.

100%! I'm not impressed by jet engine land speed records. Land speed records set by wheel powered vehicles should, in my opinion, be the only ones permitted to qualify. Even though jet or other (?) non wheel powered vehicles are in a totally different category, their presented to the public in a manor that overshadows wheel powered vehicles and their records. It's like saying NASAs jet sled can qualify for land speed records, now how ridicules is that! OR, maybe an F22 coming across the salt at 1000 MPH with his gear down and wheels touching the ground, hardly likely, but I guess in someones eyes would qualify also. Some of this stuff reaches a point where it looses interest and not many people care anymore. One of my favorites though is Burt Munro, who took a little old beat up motorcycle and made it go fast enough to set a record in his class that hasn't been beat to this day. Now that's a record!

Rockets on wheels ain't impressive but for th' ground-effects engineering.

To get a traction propelled device to ultimate speeds takes a bit more effort.

Burt was an eccentric of some note, too. Much respect for HIM.
