ok,

so i replaced my upper collars, but when i was at the shop, they didn't have any lower collars as it seems my engine didn't have any when i got it. should i have some, are they really important with a cast iron head?

this wouldn't be the first thing to be incorrect in my engine, but i hope it's the last. at least until it runs. well, at least one more week before i get it back now......

Yes, they are necessary to keep the valve spring located, and to keep it from wearing into the head itself. Victoria British has them listed, and they aren't that expensive. About a buck apiece.
