Lower A-arm bracket & reinforcement gusset

OK guys - here is the deal. I finished removing the drivers side lower A-arm. The two brackets have different size studs and only had one stud per bracket rather than the two on the TR6. The passenger side only had one stud per bracket as well.

My question is should I pop for the two stud brackets ala the TR6?

My bracket mounting points haven't been reinforced, so now would seem to be the time. Any one been there and done that and have postcards to share?

Thanks!

If your current brackets are good, you can drill for a second stud and weld in a bolt. Make up a backing plate from 1/8" or 14ga steel.

I installed TR6 brackets (drilling the existing mounting points for the second hole) and cut a square backing plate to fit inside the mounting point. The bad news was that after 70,000 miles the face of the mounting point started to rip right at the edges which of course corresponded to the edge of my backing plate.

Note that I did not install the reinforcing gussets as I'm not sure they were generally available back in the early 80's but I plan on doing so for both of my cars.

Guys - if I want to throw cash rather than skill at this I could always just pop for the later TR6 dual stud bracket, right? One of the existing studs on the bracket is slightly bent so I'll be replacing at least one of the brackets anyway.

One more question if I may, should I also be thinking about using TRF part # TRFCD137 WASHER PLATE. It's specified for the TR6 but isn't the issue the same on the TR4A or am I getting my cars confused?

Right, I used the TR6 2 stud brackets and I now have new TR6 frame mounting point brackets waiting to fix my car.

I found this VTR article on reinforcing the TR4A-TR6 front suspension.

It mentions the TRF reinforcement plate part number you have as well. I would definitely add the later TR6 gussets as well to the rear frame mounting point brackets since that's where mine started to tear even with a reinforcement plate.
