Lound "clang" on closing driver's door

Howdy all. My 250 has started making a new and unpleasant noise when I close the driver's door. When I shut the door, I get a loud "clang" metallic sound. Turns out that it's the rear fender, and it seems to be coming from the back end of the fender where the bumper bracket passes through the fender. In looking it over, I see that on the driver's side, there is play in and out on the bottom of the fender, and this movement is what's making the clang sound when I close the door. There's no play on the passanger side at this point on the fender -- rather, it's very secure.

This is a new development, since I'm confident that the rear bottom of the driver's rear fender was pretty solid. Is there something that could have come loose, disappeared or rotted away? The bumper and the brackets are all quite secure. Is there a grommit that goes in the hole where the bracket passes through that might havce disappeared?

Any guidance is most welcome.

Sounds like it's falling apart.

I'll give you $1500 for the car but you will have to pay shipping.
