I admit it. Occasionally I buy a lottery ticket or two. I actually broke even this year. Woohoo.

In Florida we can buy "advance" tickets for future drawings. Just black-in a special box that lets you choose the same numbers for up to the next 52 drawings. How convenient.

So... me being the strange fellow I am, I go to the grocery store and fill out my numbers, and 4 future drawings. Pull out a $5 and hand it all to the nice lady behind the counter. Then I hit her with the question: If I win do I get a refund on the unused drawings? Seems to me if I get the $6mil tonight then the other 4 tickets are a waste, shouldn't I get that $4 back?

Try it...occasionally they actually go look it up, ask, or offer to call someone to find out.

Golly I'm mean.

See ya!

....& don't believe yourself when you check your own numbers - have the clerk check also...couple of weeks ago, I thought I'd not won anything on a Tennessee lottery - clerk checked & I'd won $4. WOO HOO!

In Illinois the lottery commission has proposed a new service for those people who have a gambling problem. All that the afflicted person need do is to register their name as having an addiction and the lottery will NOT PAY OUT ANY large winnings to the person registered! They will not stop the person from buying the tickets, they just won't pay them off! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif

That sounds to me like the state has a gambling problem!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazyeyes.gif Geesh, it's OK to squander what little hard-earned cash you may have, but God-forbid you should squander lottery winnings???????????

I buy one ticket per drawing, knowing the astronomically impossible odds! BUT, what are the chances if you did not buy 1? Years ago I spent a week painting the legend on a 50' billboard with the only words "N.J. Lottery...You Can't Win it unless You're in it!"

> "...You Can't Win it unless You're in it!"

I say, "You can't lose if you don't play!"

I view lotteries as a tax on those who don't understand the math of the high odds against them.

Unfortunately, my wife is one of those people.

Amen, brotha!

I look at it this way: instead of paying for lottery tickets, send the money to me. Your chances of winning will be the same, within about eight decimal places.

I don't disagree, but if you understand the odds and get a kick out of it what's the harm. I don't "drink" (not a drop). I don't smoke. I have zero debt. $52 a year isn't going to kill me.

Contrast that to the other day when I was shopping, a woman in line bought $10 worth of tickets, then another $10 on scratch-off tickets. I have to wonder if she does that once or twice a week constantly...that adds up.

Well, the FL one was ~originally~ to be an education fund (I know, I know) and still puts a substantial contribution to it, I've spent that $52 a year as well.

As for the "poor sods with a gambling addiction": FREE WILL is a right we are allowed to exercise here, Constitutionally... compulsive addictive behavior is NOT a "disease", rather a behavior. "Legislating" behavior has proven time-and-again to be an exercise in futility. Yet we seem Hades-bent on continuing to TRY doing it. BAH! If Granny Billie-June pishes away her Social Security money on Lotto and Poppy's beer ration, so be it.

doc, i might buy one ticket a month or less, but some people can have a problem with buying tickets, when the judge of the probate court asked why i felt i should get conservatorship over my dads estate i just dumped these plus five other bundles on his desk, case closed!

It's not whether you win or lose...It's how you play the game! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif High odds...or NO odds?
