Lost Washer in Bellhousing

I am teaching my buddy about cars buy letting him help me work on my car. We were tearing down the exterior of the engine tonight and he didn't do things in the order I told him and possibly lost one of the brass seals to the oil filter pipe in through the starter hole to the bell housing (don't ask me how)

Anyways, if it did fall in there is it going to hurt anything? I can try getting it out with a magnet but is there another way.

How do you get the tranny out? Does the engine have to come out or can it drop off the back like a normal car. Seems to me the trans would have to be off first since it looks like the engine can only come out straight up.

Also I twisted the little pipe that runs from the block alone side it and then into the oil filter housing where can I get a new one, Moss doesn't seem to sell it.

Hello Tullamore,
if you are talking about the steel oil pipe on a BL 'A' series engine then the olives are usually too tight to come off the pipe. However, if it has dropped into the bell housing then being brass a magnet won't do any good. It shouldn't do any harm but it is better to remove it.
Personally I would drill a hole about 1" diameter with a hole saw at the bottom of the bell housing and try and get it out that way.
Regarding a replacement pipe, either get one made by an engineering shop or use a flexible high pressure hose.

A friend of mine just had the same trouble on his jeep, cept he dropped a starter bolt into the bellhousing. He was able to easily recover it using Piman's suggestion of drilling a hole in the bottom of the bellhousing. I see you have a 66 sprite, i believe in order to pull the tranny you have to pull the engine.

Tullamore, before you start cutting into the Tranny housing, try bending a piece of thin wire, such as safety wire, or a thin welding rod, into a hook and fishing around to snag it.
Or, attach a small ball of cloth to the wire, LIBERALLY cover it with grease, and try fishing through the starter hole. I've had this work for retrieving small non-magnetic objects dropped in impossible places.
It's not going to hurt anything to leave it in there.
You can pull the engine without removing the tranny, but the engine has to come out to get the transmission out. I usually pull them as a unit.
Good luck.

It's only a soft piece of brass....I know I wouldn't worry about it.
If you really are concerned, there is a "flex-lite" dodad that can be bought from Harbor Freight (and other places). It has a long flexible end with a battery powered light and will allow you to "see around corners". We use one to look inside airplane wings but it would be ideal for your situation too.
But again, I think you're safe to ignore it.

Do you know where I would go about finding a hose that would fit?
