Long story, last summer I sold my '77 midget to my brother (not a mistake beleave it or not) so I could purchase a '76B. Over the winter my brother decided to have the midget repainted by the local vo-tech kids(my brother is a school teacher) He got a phone call today from the vo-tech teacher asking if he had a spare key? Seems one of the students "misplaced" the key! No spare key!! Any suggestions? Would a locksmith be able to help? Or is he looking at replaceing the ignition altogether? Thanks, John

Yes...find the oldest locksmith in the oldest building in the oldset part of town - he can make a new key.

Just read the info here... i took a locksmith course a few years back but, would have opted for Tonys suggestion and have done the same before when I needed a key for a nash Metro. But the site mentioned above sounds promising... I need a glove box key for a 76 Midget and will give him a try.

Hello all,
most of these locks can be made to work if you have any key of the same series and can remove the barrel. (I.e. it's of no use if you are locked out of the car, it's a locksmith's job in that case.)
Take the barrel and insert the key, you will see some of the pins (I'm sure there is a correct term for these but I don't know it) protruding. Just file them flush with the body of the lock and your oddball key will now work the lock.
It doesn't help with security but then the original is not so strong in that aspect anyway.

I had the same experience with a door lock on a 1963 Cessna (airplane). No key... called the local locksmith to have new locks put on but he had a set of keys made without removing the lock. Took him about 20 minutes or so.
