Tuesday morning...he was foaled in '92 so going on 31. He was healthy until last night early morning. Collic but I think brought on by age and kidney failure... I've seen that before.

He was my 'parade horse' because he was so calm. I'd ride him in the 'Goldrush days' parade thru town...he acted like a parade was an everyday deal.

Once we were behind the Firetruck and they were blowing the siren...flashing lights... Monte just rode on a loose rein as if that was just right.
 
That really sucks. Like a parent losing a child, I'd imagine.

Truly saddened by the event.

You know.... Monte never had colic, was never ill besides a cold, never lame, he had the odd scrape or cut but never needed a vet as I doctored him. I'd give him his shots, I could paste worm him without a lead on him, he'd just stand there and allow me to do whatever.
He loved his butt scratched but not his ears. Healthy as a tick until he wasn't.

Colic can be brought on by large swings in temperature.
we have lost many to colic over the years of all different ages. We have a customers horse here that is going on 33. We feed him wet pellets.

Remember that a great one only comes along very few times in your life. Hopefully you have another that was a buddy to your lost one.
We have lost two in a day to old age and they where inseparable…retired show horses that had been mates for 10 plus years after retirement.My last personal horse I lost to colic was a Ray Hunt bred mare. That was a hard one as they aren’t making them anymore.

I've had some good horses but three great ones...Monte was a great one...much like people, and you know this, it takes two personalities to fit. I'm older too so that plays a part...we were both a coupla old guys and Monte got that too.

Appreciate all of the comments and input and I know many here have been thru the exact same thing with loved animals.... they just turn the brightness notch up in our lives.
 
We are fortunate to have a farm near a clinic that does surgery. It is very expensive now, but have a few on insurance to cover the cost.

Sorry for your loss of such a wonderful animal. I understand the hurt as I also have been down that road before. PJ
