Losing my transmission.

It's gone. Kaput.
It wont engage any gear without a fight now, and certainly wont do it on the move.
It smokes, it stinks, it sounds like a hippo with a chainsaw hacking at a Cadillac.

Anyhoo, I've got a 210 in the shed that will go in very soon. Well, as soon as I can 'hide' $700 from the mrs.
I have a couple of questions before I buy my first engine hoist and get medieval.

1. Does the R'gate kit use a datsun clutch, or BMC?
2. Flywheel, stock or Datsun?
3. What extra stuff do I need to buy as well as the kit?

Thanks guys!
I wish I'd have gotten video of this lump puking on the driveway, it was a spectacular disintegration.

Well, Barry, better today than Sunday, I guess!
I can't answer your Datsun questions, but if you want to borrow a ribcase to get you by, just let me know.
Jeff

Datsun disk, BMC pressure plate

2. Flywheel, stock or Datsun?

Stock

If you don't want to cut the bell housing - a Trooper II or other gear reduction starter - but no necessary.

I've got a datsun box and can't bring myself to install it. Keep the ribcase, they're fun to rebuild and add to the charm. I have loads of parts if you want to do it.

Appreciate it Jeff, but it'll start getting chilly here, so now's a good time to put her away and do a swap.
I now buy into the theory that these cars prefer to break down close to home.
I knew the synchro in third was gone or going, I guess it was a (short) matter of time before the rest followed it.
They are brass right? That's what the oil drain was full of, shards and shards of brass.
Anyone want a ribcase? Free! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif

If you don't rebuild it I'll take the old case. Then we'll have a rebuilt "forum transmission" for the next member with a breakdown.

That's not a bad idea Chris.
I won't get around to rebuilding it, and better it go where it'll be used.
No, I don't want to cut anything, I want a minimally invasive transplant as possible, so that starter is a good option.
Does the R'gate kit come with a clutch slave? I ask because I'm tempted to get all the hydraulic stuff at the master end replaced anyway, just trying to get a feel of the anatomy.

It doesn't use a stock datsun clutch, but some other unit. Have you checked into the morriservice kit yet?

If I do another one, I will use their kit.

I won't be doing this swap Chris, my brother is coming over for a couple of weeks to sort it out. He's really asking.
I'm just funding the tools, equipment and his appetite.

Barry... have you considered giving BillM a shout? He makes a 210 kit that I believe is a bit cheaper than Rivergate's.

Oops.
I already threw down my (wifes) credit card #.

While I'm nowhere the near the subject....
Chris S, you have plans for an adapter for an engine stand right? I think I'll need one of them and a hoist this wekend too....Thanks Chris.

There's a song out there somewhere (Google Spinal Tappets I think) that took that idea to the logical conclusion. Very funny stuff!

Barry, I've got one of ChrisS's adaptors for an A-series, and won't need it for a few months if you'd like to borrow it -- it's set up for a Harbor Freight engine stand. PM me if you're interested...

Yes Mike, the Spinal Tappets did indeed allow me to lament through their music.
Drew, yessir, I had the plans in the car ready to take to the machine shop, but got distracted by something pathetic.
PM incoming.
