loose shift lever

Hi all,

I have a loose shift leaver on my GT6. First gear is hard to find, it is so loose. Also if I press down too hard when putting it in reverse, the shift leaver will slide down.
The tranny shifts fine, so I must have assembled something wrong when I put it back together. It looks fine according to the workshop manual. Any ideas?

It does sound like what happens when the plastic parts, etc. in below the gear lever in the shifter wear or break & fall out.

The "shifter kit" is also available at Spitbits with replacement parts for this problem; it's item #4 in the diagram at
https://www.spitbits.com/gt6/GT6gearbox.htm

Very simple installation.

If you rebuilt your box, some of those shifter parts may have been missing without your knowing it. The big plastic bushings sometimes break, fall off, & are released onto the road.

Put what kind of car you have in the subject of your message, so the GT6 folks won't assume it's just another TR-3-4-250-6 issue!

Doesn't the Competition Manual (uh, Kastner) have a tip about spinning the plastic parts out of aluminum to solve just such a problem? I'll check if there is interest.

LOL!! I am not laughing at the original post, I am laughing at how something like that has to be said.

I'd forgotten about that. The Competition Preparation Manual suggests replacing 1 of the plastic bushings with a piece machined from half-hard type aluminum, 7075 T6, or aluminum bronze. There's a diagram w/measurements.

Since the kits are still easily available, they're probably the easiest & most comfortable way to go.

Thanks for the responses, I had installed that kit when the tranny was out, but something must be incorrect. I will have to haul the cover off and have a closer look.

Hopefully you'll only need to remove the "extension"; just as hopefully, any problem will be obvious! Even off the gearbox, the action of the shift lever should be pretty precise with a new bushing kit, almost stiff. (That stiffness will lessen soon enough.)

Yes you only need to remove the extension to install the ant-rattle/shifter kit. Put it in neutral 1st, so it's easier to find the spot when putting it back on.
