Loose 3000 Shift Lever

The lady I sold my 1966 big Healey to drove it to the store last week. When she left home she noticed that the shifter felt a bit out of line, but went anyway. When she wanted to leave the store, the shifter was so loose she could not put the car in any gear. She called a tow truck and had the car towed back to her house.

She had the transmission rebuilt about 500 miles ago by a very respected mechanic here in the Raleigh area.

What do the forum members think she should be looking for without pulling the gearbox out? My first thought was the nylon bushing the lever sits in. I am not close to where she lives so I can't drive over to help her.

I don't think the nylon bushing would deteriorate so quickly and, at most, it would result in a sloppy-feeling shifter--they're kinda sloppy anyway--but you would still be able to change gears. I think it's more likely one, or both of the of the 'socket' or 'lever'--#91 and/or #92 on the diagram--has come loose due to loose or lost clamping screws. Worst case is the selector lever broke off, but that would have made a serious racket. The gearbox cover can removed in situ.

 
The rebuilder should be contacted. Maybe have her send him a short video showing what it’s doing.
