Looking for some Lotus info.....

I am probably crazy, but I was just wondering what a solid driver of an elan or europa would run me, price wise. Iam not really looking for anything in particular, I've just always wanted a lotus.

It depends on where you're located. Around here, a reasonable Elan would go for $13K and up but they're not plentiful.

I've only seen one "driver" quality Europa (Renault engined) and it had just sold for about $4000 - this was 6 years ago. All the other Europas I've seen have been top-notch Twincams way beyond "driver" level, or total junk not worth the tipping fee to get rid of them.

When I say driver I am leaning more to the project side of 'driver'....Even if it's complete and solid but non running, or needing brakes/clutch hydraulics is o.k with me.

Elan prices have been strange, I have seen a car completely in need of restoration on Ebay go for $12k USD and then a few days later I read of a guy sell his immaculate car for $12k. (it should have been closer to $20k). I was trying to sell mine for a time for $19.5k, but decided to keep it and have since put more money into it.

I would say expect to bay between $7-12k for a driver that needs work.
There have been a few on Ebay the past few months.
Currently, there is a butchered coupe on there with a Cosworth motor, it is at $10k right now. If the motor is good it is worth the money. A friend of mine had a cosworth powered Elan that would see off Ferraris

The Elan coupes go for a lot less than convertibles.
Europas were a bargain,last time I checked.

I looked at some Ebay europa's....I like them becasue their so different(kinda like a british el-camino) but I think I might get tired of that look real fast....Prices seam good though.

The Cosworth on Ebay has the wrong motor in it. Stay away from that car.

What do you mean wrong motor?
Elans never came with a Cosworth motor, so any one would be wrong. That car has been terribly done IMO, but a good Cosworth motor ( I don't know if that one is good) alone would be worth the $10k it was up to last time I checked.

My friends Cosworth in the Elan I mentioned above cost $30k to build

That said, I agree, stay away from that car

There is another nice somewhat stock Elan up now

That's what I'm meaning to say, it's the wrong Cosworth motor, this one's bad. It's totally not fit for the car like the Cosworth BDP in Andy's. His car from what it looks like was beautifully done. This car's been talked about on LotusElan.net I think, and the verdict is to stay away from it.

Yes yes I still know that all Elans had the Lotus tuned Ford 1600 cc engine with Dual overhead cams and dual Weber carburetors until the Federalized S4 which had the emission controls (disabled in our car) and dual Stromberg units.

I know you know, but others may not know /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I'd say stay away from the Cosworth for sure, they are not for everybody if you like sleeping soundly at night ( everytime mine hiccups I see dollar signs ) The Elan is the best choice IMO because you have some chance of recovering most of your investment. The Super 7 would be my second choice only because it's only a fair weather car, otherwise it would be my first choice ( Like in California )
