Manual transmissions have always been the "Rubik's Cube" of auto repairs to me, but I thought I'd try a rebuild on a ribcase just for grins. I have three non functioning ribcase transmissions that I've acquired through the usual junk hoarding behavior associated with keeping 50 year old cars on the road. I also have a stuck-in-gear smoothcase that came off the BE when I upgraded to a rebuilt ribcase. The late Eric Jones did that one for me and it works great. No whine at all in first.
One of the ribcase transmissions arrived in pieces in a five gallon bucket. The other two were "running when taken off the car". What a joke. One was totaled (full of shrapnel) and the other two have damaged laygears (but in different places on the laygear). Well, they were free so I guess I got what I paid for.
I thought it would be nice to put one working transmission together for a spare from the parts of the three non functioning units. After surveying the parts collection, I need a laygear and a reverse gear that still has some life in them. These are probably high wear items for all ribcases, but If you've got one you don't need, send me a PM. If you need a part, lets trade.
I also am looking for a front cover for a smoothcase transmission. With what I've learned in taking the ribcase units apart, I think I can fix the smoothcase as well. The front cover off my smoothcase was adapted to fit the rebuilt ribcase as a way of making the geometry of the clutch throwout mechanism work perfectly with my 948. It works great, but now I don't have a front cover. The front cover off the ribcase does not look like it can be adapted to fit the smoothcase.
