Gentlemen:

I recently serviced the speedometer on my 1960 BE. I needed to cut off the lower part of the trip odometer reset rod. I'm looking for a replacement part for this.

Does anyone have an old speedo that they no longer need with this part still serviceable? I just need the lower half of the rod, which is connected with a cotter pin about halfway up.

Please let me know,

Curious as to why you cut the rod. The knob just pulls off after you remove the setscrew. The cotter pin only holds the gear to the shaft. The shaft is one piece, not two.

I recently had to buy an entire junk speedo on eBay just to get the rod. It was the only part that was any good!
I had two others here that had had the reset rod cut.

You <u>could</u> make a thin wall sleeve and join the two pieces back together.

The set screw was frozen in place, so I had to get past it.

Additionally, I went through an instruction sheet that had a step by step on how to get the speedo apart. It said that after removing the lower part that it is possible to get the guts out of the housing. I couldn't, so I cut the rod.

I started to take apart another speedo I had laying around. I removed the set screw and then tried to get the guts out. After about 30 minutes of trying I took another approach: I removed the needle, then the dial face, then the guts came right out.

The rod is this speedo is not the same as in the BE speedo. I can try to fab something, but I want to try to get the right part if possible.

The set screw on this one was frozen too. I just used a bit of heat from a pencil torch to get it loose.
You have to completely remove the rod from the odometer cluster to get the speedo apart.

My initial roadblock was getting the speedo out of the housing. Once I got it our I was able to service the whole thing.

I think I recall a thread several months ago that said once the lower part of the reset rod was removed that it is possible to get the speedo out of the housing.

Is that true?

MXP, I just went and did a bit of playing around with one, trying to come up with a game plan.
To do it properly, the reset knob <u>has</u> to come off, as it's a larger diameter than the hole in the case.
The <span style="color: #FF0000">only</span> "lower part" of the rod is the knob. The rod is one solid piece, as shown in the above pictures.
You <u>will</u> have to pull the needle and gauge face, though. That's no big deal.
Reassembly is pretty straightforward. After the rod is in place, with the gear pinned to the shaft, just install the speedo hub. Reinstall the knob, gauge face, needle, retainer cup, glass and trim ring.
I hope this helps. If you need more help, I'll take one back apart, taking step by step photos.
