Stag Looking at a Stag

I am going to look at a Stag for sale. I think I've done enough research to know what I am getting into. My question is availability of parts. I don't see "Stag" listed with VB or Moss. How hard is it to get a new water pump or other parts.

Parts supply in the UK is good, although I suspect that you would rather not have to pay for shipping. Have a look at Rimmer Brother's web site to get an idea. At least it shows that parts are being re-manufactured.

Triumph Stag Club USA Founder, Michael Coffey has opened North American Stag Parts in Clarks Green PA.

I'd start with a call to him, followed by your $25 for club membership, and then an hour on the phone discussing how to, prepare and keep your Stag running reliably.

We have located some 430 Stags in North America, and have somewhere between 250 and 325 active club members.
 
How about some information and pictures of your new purchase. Is this a restoration project or a driver that needs the usual upkeep.

Are you going to VTR 2008 in Michigan? Our Club is sponsoring the popular "Ride the Stag" event once again.

Simply encourage Ian to take one for a ride/drive with one of our club members, get the facts.
Once he puts his foot to the floor, he will be absolutely hooked and he will be begging you to buy one!!

I mean, we are preparing one to travel cross country in 2009 for the charity drive, and it will make the whole trip without incident because we know how to fix every issue.
That is the purpose of our club of course.

Worth mentioning perhaps that many Stag parts can be sourced in the US, because they are common with other Triumph models. The water pump, for example, is common with the TR7 (tho there are both 6 and 12 vane variants so be sure you get the one that matches your cover).

Easiest way to see if a particular part is available is to find the factory part number (buy a factory Spare Parts Catalog or check the on-line version at https://www.triumphstag.net/start/technical/partslist/initialpage.php) then check the database at TRF.

For example,

shows the 6-vane water pump assembly to be factory P/N 519343, which TRF has cross-referenced to GWP207 (currently on sale for 'only' $280).

I'll also mention that by far my favorite UK vendor is LDPart even though they stock only a limited range of parts. For example, they don't have water pump assemblies but do have the parts to rebuild your assembly for about 1/5 the cost of the entire assembly.

And since some WP assemblies on the market have been found to be defective (gears too soft or cut at wrong angles, etc.); there's something to be said for rebuilding your old one.

PS, shipments under 4.4 pounds are significantly cheaper to ship from the UK, if the vendor will use Royal Mail rather than their usual shipping company.
