Spitfire Looking at a Spitfire

I think I may have lost it but I'm looking at this 77' Spitfire and a 1980 parts car. See the link below:

It's not like I don't have enough projects but I've always wanted a Spitfire!

What do you guys see in the pictures? The asking price isn't bad.... but I'll see what I can do. What kind of balpark do you think this "pair" is worth? Can the hood of an 80' fit on a 77' with the different bumpers?

Hi Duke - Spitfires are fun. I really enjoyed mine.

Hard to tell too much from the pictures but it looks like you have some fender rust repair on the rears, and probably the front valances (don't they all). Looks like an interior is needed as well.

Any ideas on the drivetrain condition?

The PO says that the engine starts and runs but he hasn't installed the new master and slave clutch cyl's yet so it isn't driving. Both items are included. I comes with the hard top and soft top. From the pictures it looks like the left rear is banged up a bit. Also looks like the air filter is missing, he dosen't know much about the transmission or overdrive. Other than that I don't know much else. How can you tell if there is an overdrive installed? Is there a switch on the dash like the TR3?

From looking at the picture of the 77 interior on the second page, you see a black plastic gear shift knob with a switch on the top. That's your OD switch. It appears that the 80 has an OD also. To tell for sure though you need to pull the tranny tunnels, and look for an OD unit.

The bonnets should be a straight swap out, 71-80 all list the same part number for bonnet parts in the VB catalog. As far as the bumper swaps, I'm told that you need to do some modification to the frame for a rear bumper swap, but fronts should be a direct swap out.

Yes on the bonnet switch. Did he give you a price for the pair? It seems that prices on eBay on TR6's has dropped since the current ecomonic situation dropped apon us.

LOOKS LIKE A BUTTON FOR O/D ON THE KNOB.
HAD NO PROBLEM CHANGING RUBBER TO STEEL ON BUMPERS.

LOOKING AT THE CONDITION HOPE YOU ARE GETTING THEM REAL CHEAP.
TOM

I don't know about cheap. he wants 400 for the parts car and around 1300 for the 77....OBO, I think OBO , what do you guys think would be a good price for both?

$400 for the parts car is quite likely worthwhile.

$1300 for the 77, I'm cheap, so I'm not so inclined for that one.

The o/d worth a couple hundred as it sits.

give him a business card with 800 bucks on the back and walk away.

There is an awful lot of work there, even just to see if it goes. and the interior is the expensive part.

PS is your Apache original? or have you done the engine and airframe mods. I put a new instrument panel, radio stack and a long snoot radome on one of those a while back.

Obviously, the less you pay, the better for you. But for those of us who live in the Northeast Rust Belt and haven't routinely seen Spitfires that solid since they left the showroom floor, looks like a pretty decent package to me! That assumes that no major drivetrain work is needed (I mean rebuilds, not tuneups)....
