Look at this part.

Looks like oil has burnt on this over the years. The balk ring actually is suppose to ride here.

Left end ring, black smooth except where it came off and is proper underneath.

Anyone seen this before?

Not sure I think that is a coating. I think it is more likely something burnt on there. Maybe. None of the other parts have a coating but then what I know about trannys is next to nothing.

Yes, there is supposed to be a bronze sleeve sintered on the conical part. I've got a ribcase that DPO ran out of oil that have all of the sycro's looking like that.

Kurt.

Got lots of input gears that look like that. Same for 2nds & 3rds. Probably needs replacement. But, the dog teeth (little ones) don't look beat up enough to suggest a completely worn out gear or syncro. I've known a few people who have tried to repair the gears that had lost the sintered material, but very few have been successful or lasted doing it. Replacement inputs (new) are very hard to find. Good used ones are readily available.

Ahh, I am learning learning learning. Thanks.

This tranny will never be raced or even driven hard by me so used parts are great as long as they allow for smooth shifting.

Thank goodness my Lay gear is absolutely pristine. In fact I am not sure that it is not new.

The layshaft gears may not be worn but the I.D. where the needle bearings live can. How does the shaft look?

No clue Doc. will check later, they are still wrapped and packed.

Jack,

This part looks very familiar :wall: If this came from where I think it did.

Unfortunately, I think you are doing what I did about 6 or 7 years ago with the transmission, except I didn't clean all the bits up as nicely as you have, before I made the decision to go with the Rivergate conversion.

Heck, I will tell you that, if this is from the box 'o stuff I sent you, I do remember that there was a smell of old, burnt oil on things when I pulled the transmission from the car. I suspect that is was from the 2nd or 3rd level previous owner of the car, as the guy I got my car from, got the car from a friend's estate, who got it from a guy who bought it for his 16-17 year old daughter. The two middle guys were going to work on it to get it repaired, after (you guessed it) the young daughter's dad decided he didn't need to spend any more $$ on repairing said daughter's breakage of 30+ year old (at that time) things by driving as if it was a new ricer rocket.

I pulled the transmission from the car within days of making sure the car was worth the effort, after getting the engine started.

Whatever you do, don't do a google search. :eeek:
That will teach you quite a bit that you didn't know about trannys, though.

Hi Larry, yep I expect this tranny was cooked, however it still looks pretty darn good. However I need an expert down here to look at it and I think I found the guy. Will let all know how it goes.

Jack, check your PMs.
Thanks, Rut

Jack,
I've got everything boxed up and ready to go and the pkgs should be there Wed or Thur. I'm traveling to Albany, GA and possibly S AL and might swing thru your area as well for work. If my schedule works out would you like to meet and I can deliver them in person? I'm not sure that I can, but will know more tomorrow.
Rut

of course I would love to meet you. Can I buy lunch if it works out.

Give me a call when you know if it will work for you.
