TR2/3/3A Lockheed Diff Oil Seal Replacement

Have a bit of an oil leak at front of Lockheed diff on my 56 TR3, and before driving season starts was planning to replace oil seal at front of diff. Manual makes it sound very easy (assuming pre-load can be left as is). Is it really this simple or am I likely to encounter "hidden" issues? Anything special to look out for? Thanks, Mike

Nope, pretty much just as easy as it sounds. Only hard part is holding the flange from turning while you remove and install the nut. I drilled some holes in a piece of flat iron from Home Depot, and bolted it to the flange. (This isn't a TR3 obviously, but I used the same piece on the TR)

While the flange is off, clean up the sealing surface with fine abrasive cloth. If you can't polish away the mark where the seal rides, then consider installing a Speedi-sleeve or replacement flange. But, if it's the original seal that you are replacing, chances are that the replacement (which will be rubber instead of leather) will ride on a different area anyway.

Oh yeah, you need to be a little careful while prying out the old seal, not to gouge the housing.

Thanks Randall. Hopefully I can do this without too much problem while in place in car. I must admit I'm liking idea of working with my lift rather than lying on my back as I've always done in the past. Cheers, Mike

Thank Geo ... think I have similar puller stashed away in one of my tool boxes. Cheers, Mike

The HF seal puller hook bent the first time I used it. I bought a Lisle for a few bucks more and it worked. I think there was a recent thread on this subject.

For me, the handle on the HF puller broke on the first pull. I've used the Lisle tool in the past and it took everything I could throw at it, but somehow it grew legs and disappeared from my tool chest. After the HF tool broke, I just used a big screwdriver (one of the ones that no one ever uses for turning screws).

Well got everything off OK ... worst part was getting the cotter pin out! Anyway, managed to mess up the seal when I was putting it back in. My fault. Seal for TRF was Pioneer Weston W26215059R6 and original (much more substantial in build) looks like DC262116. I want to find same seal locally if possible to same time and shipping cost. Not much luck cross-checking parts on-line. Anyone have other part numbers I could try? Original TR part no was 100898 (Moss lists as 520-090). Thanks again. Mike

I've got a note saying that a National 470487N will fit. RockAuto has the same number listed, so that might be right.

I was able to get the pinion seal for the TR6 differential at NAPA.
I don't know what y'all have up there, but try your FLAPS or Canadian Tire, perhaps.

Thanks for the suggestions. Randall, think that would be the same seal for all diffs whether Lockheed or Girling as long as they are solid axle? RockAuto site says that is outer seal so I was wondering if that was the axle seal rather than pinion seal. I also found one cross ref to SKF 15194 but can't verify it is correct. Poolboy, yes, I will check locally, but the usual reaction is ... What is a Triumph? That's why it's best to suggest to them a part number. I actually found a x-ref to a Canadian Tire part number, but it does not come up on their website. Cheers, Mike
