This is a question for those of you who run both Linux and Windows on your computer. When you partition the drive, can you view and access files saved in one partition on the other? For example, let's say I was writing a document in my Windows partition and later I wanted to access it in my Linux partition, would I be able to?
 
Hi Walt - back when I was struggling with Linux, I found Linux could read Windows partition files, but not vice versa. Had to use a Windows app named something like LinuxReader.

Tom, thanks. That would probably work for me, since I prefer Linux. I only want Windows for the few applications I use that Linux does not support.
 
I no longer have anything with Windows but when I did, my experience was the same as Tom's. Linux would read the Windows partition and write (IIRC) but Windows would not read Linux.
 
Linux partitions with Ext4 by default, which Windows doesn't read. You can choose to partition with NTFS, but I don't. With a blank hard drive, I will make a partition from half the disk called "Files" using NTFS. Every OS will be able to read it. Then I'll install Windows creating a new partition using half the remaining storage. Partitioning that as NTFS as well. Finally, install Linux on the remaining space with Ext4. Both Windows and Linux will auto create additional partitions as they install.

I like that idea Greg. I have decided to go ahead and work on upgrading the old desk top. I forgot that Windows 7 is a pretty decent operating system, so for now I'll just leave it alone and when I put a new HD I I'll follow your advice.
 
Ir both OS running at the same time like we have at work.
I just copy paste from one to the other.
