I seem to have one tappet that is clicking. I pulled them out, and after cleaning found the bottoms to be hammered flat by the camshaft and pitted. Rocker shaft arms are free and passages clear. Put it together, adjusted and still the click. Comp. check is ok. I want to replace them (pitting)
but Moss says the 6 port motor tappets aren"t available.
Thought all the 6"s were the same....any input? 50,000 miles.

I had a similar "sound" problem but it wasn't the tappets. It was a piece of broken piston ring on top of a piston that was being hammered on by a valve. It was a ticking sound that after many valve adjusting attemps could not be adjusted out. Compression was fine all across the board. See if you can "borescope" each cylinder.

Moss only shows one part (#021-365) for all 6-cyl engine lifters (tappets) @ $9.45 each. They look to be available online. I'd be really surprised if they don't have them; I'm sure other vendors will.

But ..... I don't think pitted lifters would cause your clicking noise. Sometimes exhaust leaks will make a clicking noise.

I haven't heard a pitted tappet making a clicking noise yet (as decribed). I usually have them resurfaced when installing a reground cam. Saves money.

If you have a tappet that is flattened and pitted, you have a problem. The bottom of the tappet should be slightly convex, so that, with the slightly tapered grind on the camshaft lobe, the tappet will rotate in its bore. If it is flattened or worse yet, concave, you really have a serious problem. And pitting is never good. You may even have a damaged lobe on your cam.
 
+1. This is called hard facing. You need to check out the moter for problems. Would look at the cam, chain, etc.

OH Great, I never thought of other problems like a ring piece, or cam. I sure hope the cam is OK. I looked into having the tappets resurfaced but It would cost as much as new ones, even more (special grinder). I'll go with the new tappets cause of the pitting and wear and see what happens. Where do you get a bore scope? Thanks guys.
