About ten days ago, I took a single Aleve (over the counter) pain pill for a foot ache.
I'd never taken this stuff before and it turns out it has naproxin (sp)......something I'm apparently very allergic to.
I became covered in huge hives and was very itchy. Doctor gave me a cortisone shot along with steroid meds to relieve the symptoms. I was sort of itchy but tolerable.

On the last day of my meds, I went indoor karting at GPNY with friends from the VRG and the Ferrari Owner's Club. It was great fun until the last session when a guy who had been way too aggressive all day thumped we hard in a turn. The crash caused pretty bad pain in my right side.

By the next day, I was in agony.....plus now that I'd finished my meds, the itchy hives had returned with a vengeance.

I went back to doctor and he confirmed what I'd guessed: broken rib.

He also gave me another shot and a month supply of stronger meds. It has helped, but not that much. It's real hard to sleep, especially with the rib (which there's really no "fix" for except time).

So I'm pretty miserable.

But.........

Yesterday, my younger daughter gave birth to twins! Boy and girl. My older daughter gave birth 12 weeks ago to her second, so in the scope of 3 months I've gone from one to four grandchildren.

Delivery went fine and all are well.
And I'm happy to report that both my sons in law have good jobs so these new additions won't create any difficult financial burdens either.

So all is great and despite the difficult previous days, I am counting my blessings!

Now I just can't wait for my rib to stop hurting and these itchy hives to fully go away. Hopefully I'll be in better form to really enjoy these kids by next week.

Nial- First congrats on being a new grandpa!
I also have had a broken rib and know first hand just how painful it can be. It even hurts to breath at times. Now be very careful not to sneeze.... yoweeeeee!
It takes time but it will get better. I guess we'll have to put you on the DL for the BCF touch football game scheduled for next week :jester:

No Naproxine???
Oh, I'd be in limbo!!

I can't take that stuff either. Took it one day for pain in my knee while on the pitch and never again!

Nial, congrats on the new grandkids. You are a lucky man.

Cheers and best wishes.

Naproxen is a non-steroidal drug.

My doc said to stay away from all non-steroidals and said he would advice me to avoid aspirin too.
The only thing I can take is Acetaminophen (Tylenol).

Or maybe a pint of Guinness. :jester:

Congrats on the new Grand Babys! Sorry to hear about your pain and itching problems! I once had a rash on my legs that I thought would never go away. Never did figure out what caused it, but it lasted forever!

Congrats on the new g-kids Nial

Also take aspirin for my heart too.
Nothin wrong with a good steroidal here.

Good to see some new joy coming into the world. Sounds like you've got quite the brood going there, Nial. That's a lot of fresh grandbabies!

Bummer on the rib and rash, though. Ah well, the good with the bad and all that...

Nial
Congratulations on the

NEW additions to the family!

I know about broken ribs and allergies.
I'm allergic to Penicillin, and since
I occasionally race dirt bikes, broken ribs.

The worst about broken ribs is, don't laugh!
AND I mean DON"T LAUGH! Oh it hurts, that and a sneeze.

Mighty good blessings you have there!

As for the other stuff, that pint isn't a bad idea. My wife has confirmed that it wors way better than pills!

My wife's cousin is a doctor in the Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin. He doesn't have any good things to say about Tylenol either. If it were me, I'd take a few drams of Bushmills and chase it down will a couple o' pints o' Guinness. Might not do anything for the hives, but you'll sure sleep a lot better.

Good news with regard to the newborns, bummer about the rib and meds.

Had a water skiing crash back in my mid-thirties, ski went into my lower right ribcage... set it straight but before it knit, it "popped" one night in bed. I left it where it was, as the agony of putting it back a second time wasn't in my constitution. Now I'm asymmetrical.

As for the OTC pain management, feh. Aspirin is about all there is, besides the aforementioned Guinness and I'd suggest Walker Black.

I'm surprised the doctor went to a steroidal regimen. I'd be for diphenhydramine. Tho everything has some down-side.

Six more weeks of slowly lessening discomfort in any case.

I had good luck with Celebrex for sore shoulder a few yeara back. The generic NSAID he first prescribed tore my stomach up. I am allergic to penicillin and my first grand child seems to be allergic to amoxicillin. He broke out in an odd rash and later had peeling skin, lost some finger nails and toe nails. He was pretty tough though.

I'm Presbyterian.

More to the point, congrats Nial and blessings with the new blessings!

TWINS!!! Congratulations!! I have twins myself, a boy and a girl too. They're 17 now (GOD where did that time go?). Had to buy two of EVERYTHING!!! It wasn't as hard as it sounded. If you changed one you changed the other, if you fed one.......... you get the picture. Enjoy them!! They are a blast.

I am finally starting to recover from my 3 year old twins. I don't think that we slept more than 2-3 hours straight for the first 2 years! Best of wishes to the lucky new parents and grandparents.
