Let's Talk Tail Lights

Don;t care much for the looks of the tail light on my car and was eyeing the early ones.

Will an early lens screw on to the late lamp or if not will a complete early assembly bolt up to a late rear end or alternatively should I just close the garage door and go to bed? :hammer:

If you want to change, you need to change out the whole fixture. The early ones will fit your car.

Like Bruce said, if you get hold of early car tail light assemblies, then swapping them over is no big deal. Just a bit more difficult than changing over the lenses.

& if you'd like, you can get a set of early Euro upper lens, swap the wiring around, & have amber turn signals on top, rear & brake lights in middle.

and that makes sense too for RHD - you would need to swap those signal lights right to left and left to right :jester:

I got mine from eBay UK. Shipping was quite reasonable, and many of the vendors over there are quite used to dealing with US buyers.

Not quite, you need to swap both lamp sockets. The 1156 (turn signal) and 1157 (tail/brake) bulbs have different locking pin patterns, you can't install one bulb in the socket meant for another.

On the MG tail lamps, the sockets are "sweged" in place (pressed and crimped). I never tried to get my sockets out, but it looked like I'd destroy them trying.
