That you had $500 to spend to replace the carb on your 1975 MGB.

So we've eliminated the twin SU's, unless you guys know a cheap place to get em.

My two choices are:

The Weber 38 outlaw carb and manifold ($489 - brittek) and keep the stock exhaust manifold

or

The Weber 32/36 kit and manifold with the Cannon header. ($499 - Brittek)

Which do you choose?

(this is the first in a series of questions.. Please be patient with me...)

38 and save your money for the header down the road. You won't be as happy with the 32/36 long term if you are wanting a little more power.

If you get the 32/26 and decide it was a mistake later, you wasted money. If you get the bigger carb now, you can build on that base as money becomes available and you haven't wasted money by buying 2 carbs.

I don't know if I'd go for the Weber at all.

From your post, it sounds like they would be your first choice. There are so many SU's out there. Seems to me $500 would go a long way to pick up a decent set of used SU's and manifold, and still have enough to rebuild them.

Just a thought...

When you say you want to replace your 75B’s carburetor, I assume you’re talking about replacing the stock Zenith Stromberg.

That said – whatever you do, keep in mind that the stock manifold that came with the single carb setup is a combination exhaust/intake. This was done to accommodate the EGR valve that passed exhaust gases between the two. So whatever you chose to do, you will need an exhaust manifold or a header.

I have seen one of the single carb setup manifold that was split and had the EGR holes plugged off. But in the one case the intake was retained along with the stock single carb and a header was used. But for that amount of trouble I’d just spring for a header. Probably cheaper and less time.

So if it were my money I’d go with the larger outlaw setup if those are my only choices, but you’d need to set aside some extra money for the header or an older (pre/75) stock exhaust manifold. Other than that if you have to stay on a budget, then it seems that the standard 32/36 as it already comes with a header, might be your only alternative.

The Cannon header is a waste of time and money, it doesn't flow one bit better than a stock CB manifold, and won't hold up that well, either.

If you're after performance, the 32/36 is a lousy choice, too. I'd go with the 38/38 and an early exhaust manifold (which is surprisingly good).

But $500 bucks probably would turn up a good set of SUs somewhere.
